BRICK

noun

A STOUT LITTLE OBJECT THAT IS BOTH ROUGH AND RELIABLE

  1. If I had to befriend a material, a brick wouldn’t be my first choice. To be fair, it would be dependable and strong — both admirable characteristics. But can you imagine small talk with a brick at a party? It just densely stares back at you, unmoved by anything you say.

  2. Picture this: you sell flowers at your local farmers market stand every weekend. One Saturday, you are confronted with a tempestuous windstorm. You need to secure the tent over your table to protect those delicate flowers. What do you do? You refer to wisdom of ancient folklore. Should you secure your stand with piles of straw? You might as well just put the flowers out there to fend for themselves. How about some logs? Well, two problems. First, who has logs anymore? And second, you remember the second little pig had no more luck than the first. So you wisely grab a brick, or two, or, probably four. Neatly laying one on each corner of the tent to seal the covering, you have created a flower fort that would be any pig proud.

  3. Have you ever wondered why there are vertical serrations on a brick’s sides? It’s flattering. It makes it look taller and leaner.
